Marshall Langhorne was the Secretary of American Embassy at The Hague. Inscribed and signed on front end-paper by author: "Inscribed with sincere friendship for Agnes Rix by Henry van Dyke. Oct 23 1914, The Hague. where X represented an unknown quantity of work". Van Dyke was the US Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg between 1913 and 1916. Cover design by Margaret Armstrong. Dark blue clean covers with ornate decoration and lettering in gilt and green. Colour frontis with protective tissue leaf, all additional 7 colour plates are present. Slightly ex-library with a stamp on the inside front cover, blindstamp on the title page and JP written on the spine. Moderate toning, scuffing and fading to the covers, with moderate soiling, spotting and some staining. Several small pinholes and small scrapes to the covers. Corners very worn. Lengthy split along the upper rear hinge, with loss of cloth. Some toning to the paper in the interior. Fair .
